The southwest monsoon is staying active across north and central India, with several states likely to see more rain over the next few days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said a well-marked low-pressure area over northeast Madhya Pradesh and adjoining areas was driving the current weather pattern on Thursday, August 20.

The monsoon trough is also contributing to the active phase, with its western end lying north of its normal position.

The system was over northeast Madhya Pradesh and neighbouring areas at 8:30 am IST on Thursday, while the monsoon trough extended across parts of north and central India.

WHERE WILL IT RAIN?

The heaviest rain over the next few days is expected across parts of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

The IMD has forecast isolated very heavy rainfall over West Uttar Pradesh on August 20, while East Madhya Pradesh is likely to receive isolated very heavy rain on August 20 and 21.

West Madhya Pradesh is expected to see isolated heavy rainfall from August 20 to 25.

Uttarakhand is likely to remain particularly wet, with fairly widespread to widespread rainfall expected from August 20 to 26, along with isolated heavy spells.

Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir are also likely to receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall through August 22, with isolated heavy rain possible on August 20 and 21.

In Uttar Pradesh, the focus of the rain is expected to shift eastwards.

West UP is likely to receive widespread rainfall on August 20, while East UP is forecast to see fairly widespread rain from August 24 to 26, with isolated heavy rain possible during the period.

WILL IT RAIN IN DELHI-NCR?

Delhi-NCR is likely to remain under generally cloudy skies, with rain arriving in spells rather than continuously.

The IMD has forecast isolated heavy rainfall over Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on August 20 and again on August 22.

Delhi’s more detailed city forecast, however, points mainly to very light to light rain, with moderate rain possible at some places.

Beyond north India, Bihar is expected to see fairly widespread rainfall from August 22 to 24.

Chhattisgarh is likely to remain wet through August 26, while Odisha is expected to see widespread rainfall from August 21 to 26.

Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are also likely to remain active through August 26.

The latest forecast therefore points to a sustained monsoon spell rather than a single burst of rain, with the low-pressure area and monsoon trough helping keep rainfall active across large parts of north, central and eastern India over the coming days.
